 Unlike traditional ‘shock therapy,’ this treatment, called Cranial
Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES), delivers a dose of electricity that is
almost undetectable. These "micro-currents" attempt to mimic the body’s
own natural electrical function. In doing so, it is thought that they
stimulate the areas of the brain responsible for neurotransmitter and
hormone production. Most patients report a decrease in symptoms after
just one treatment session. This supports clinical studies that show an
increase in patients' serotonin and beta-endorphin levels immediately
after use.

Interestingly, Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation is actually very safe
compared to most medication. It has almost no side effects and can be
used for any age group. In contrast, most antidepressant and
anti-anxiety medication on the market now carry ‘Black Box Warning’
labels and many are not approved for use in minors.
With new non-drug treatments emerging such as Transcranial Magnetic
Stimulation (TMS) by Neuronetics, Inc. and Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS)
by Cyberonics, Inc., Moeller Medical thinks it has found a much needed
niche in this arena. VNS and TMS therapy, while their actions differ
from CES, also provide electrical stimulation of the brain. VNS requires
invasive surgery to implant a device which can be very prohibitive for
some and TMS is not yet accessible to the public. CES is a readily
available, easy to implement treatment for patients.
While its indications are restricted to depression, anxiety, insomnia,
and pain, recent research has shown promising results with disorders
such as fibromyalgia, migraine headaches, and ADHD.

significant improvement in a number of clinical parameters associated
with fibromyalgia. The results of our investigation appear to be most
encouraging, given the refractory nature of fibromyalgia pain to

Louisiana State University’s Health Sciences Center.
